1. El Roi: The God Who Sees Me(Names of God)

Hagar was a slave, a woman who became a pawn in Abraham and Sarah’s impatience for God’s plan to unfold. She knew what it felt like to be unseen by those around her.
Pregnant by her master and then mistreated and abandoned, Hagar found herself in the desert where an angel appeared to her and told her that God had heard her cries and had plans for her and the child she was carrying. She immediately declared, “You are El Roi, the God who sees me.”
Like Hagar, in moments of abandonment, isolation, and loneliness, we can cry out to El Roi, knowing that no matter where we are, our God sees us (Genesis 16:1-16).

2. Jehovah-Raah: The Lord is My Shepherd

In the ancient world, a shepherd acted as the provider and protector of the flock, guiding the sheep to pasture and water and fighting off attacking wolves.
Our God is a shepherd, but not just any shepherd; He is a royal shepherd who rules over the sheep (us) and reigns over every situation. When we need provision, protection, and sovereign guidance in our lives, we can call upon Jehovah-Raah, the Lord our Shepherd (Psalm 23).

3. El Elyon: The Most High God

When everything around us is falling apart, we need to remember that God is sovereign over all.
When idolatry threatens to overtake our nations, governments, and churches, or when we focus on our circumstances and can’t let go, we need to cling to the name “El Elyon” and remember that the God who created everything is still in control and above all (Genesis 14:18-20; Deuteronomy 26:19; Psalm 57:2).

4. Jehovah-Tsidkenu: The Lord Our Righteousness

In a world that equates righteousness with “being a good person,” our daily failures, shortcomings, and sins cry out that no amount of willpower can truly make us good enough.
We need a Savior, someone to do what our weak flesh cannot. Jesus came so that in moments when our flaws threaten to derail us, we can call upon Jehovah-Tsidkenu, the Lord our Righteousness (Jeremiah 23:5-6).

5. El Olam: The Eternal God

Often, our limited perspective is clouded by the pressures of the moment; trivial things, urgent matters can quickly overshadow our view of what truly matters.
These are the moments when we need the reminder of a God who has always been and always will be. We need to cry out to El Olam, the Eternal God (Psalm 90:1).

6. Jehovah-Nissi: The Lord is My Banner

Life is full of battles. In our homes, workplaces, schools, churches, and neighborhoods. Sometimes it feels like there is an all-out war everywhere we turn.
We may feel like we are losing, as if everything is against us, just as the Israelites did as they moved toward a hopeful future.
They faced attack at every turn – but they never fought alone. With every arrow of assault aimed at us, we need to raise a banner, a symbol of victory in our most harrowing battles, as a reminder that Jehovah-Nissi never leaves us (Exodus 17:15).

7. Jehovah-M’Kaddesh: The Lord Who Sanctifies

In Christ, we are set apart, made holy. We continue to live in this world while struggling with what it means to “not be of it.” The process of growing in Christlikeness is a lifelong journey of sanctification, the daily refining of our lives to reflect Him.
It’s easy to fall into the trap of trying to make ourselves better, while the truth is that the power for change lies in the Lord who sanctifies us. When you find yourself striving to live a holy life, call upon Jehovah-M’Kaddesh (Exodus 31:13; 1 Peter 1:15-16).

8. Jehovah-Shalom: The Lord is Peace

We know what it’s like to live in turmoil. With wars and threats of war in our world and the inner battles of fear that rage within, finding shalom seems almost impossible.
The Israelites and Gideon knew this type of uncertainty and anxiety as enemies threatened to destroy them. Gideon needed the reminder that the Lord was with him, even when his army was weaker than his opponents.
Thus, God encouraged Gideon – giving him the peace he needed to declare his trust in Jehovah-Shalom. The same assurance given to Gideon is also given to us by the Lord of Peace (Judges 6:24).

9. Jehovah-Rapha: The Lord Who Heals

When we do everything to escape pain, we often overlook the fact that God is the Healer. Do you remember how Jesus entered the town, spit on the dirt, and placed it on the eyes of the blind man so he could see forever?
Healing was a primary focus of Jesus’ ministry, and our unchanging God is still a healer today. With all the brokenness that comes as part of this sin-filled world – whether physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual – we need to remember that God heals.
And while healing may not come in the form we expect, Jehovah-Rapha is always present to hear our prayers for healing (Exodus 15:26; Psalm 103:2-3; Matthew 4:23).

10. Adonai: Lord

There is no simpler and more powerful name of God that we can call upon than Adonai. It translates simply as Lord and denotes His position when we pronounce it. And through it, we remember that He is our Master, our Authority, our King.
And while we fight to build our own kingdoms and declare “our will be done,” no other name correctly places us in our proper position. For the days when you need to remember that it’s not your kingdom but His, call upon the only name that matters: Adonai (Exodus 4:10-11).
