3 Ways Good Friday Gives Us Hope

On Good Friday, Christians around the world look back and remember the crucifixion of Jesus. Considering the death of Jesus on the cross, these events can hardly be described as “good”. However, this is the term we now use to commemorate this day.

Three days later, he was resurrected. Now that’s good news! We celebrate because we know the rest of the story. We read the ending and how it all turned out. But what about the closest family members and friends of Jesus who witnessed the event moment by moment?

Imagine the uncertainty of what was going to happen. They were overwhelmed by grief. The wait seemed unbearable. Maybe you can relate to this feeling.

Whether you’re feeling uncertain while waiting for an answer to prayer or going through heavy grief, Good Friday brings hope to all of us. Let’s examine three truths that we can take to heart and hold on to when things seem hopeless.

1. God’s promises are always true.

God’s promises are unchangeable. But let’s be honest – we don’t always choose to walk the path of truth because truth doesn’t always feel right. Life is hard, circumstances can be overwhelming, and sometimes accepting the truth is a challenge. Clinging to the truth can be difficult in the midst of chaos, pain, or uncertainty.

Despite our feelings, we can choose to believe God’s Word and His promises to us. They are always right, no matter what. We have the power through the Holy Spirit to anchor ourselves to the truth found in God’s Word, even when all hope is lost. Good Friday reminds us that God finishes what He starts and His promises are always true.

2. God is working behind the scenes.

Sometimes, it’s hard to see how, or even if, God works things together. [Romans 8:28] It is a verse that is difficult to adhere to. We wonder if He really works our circumstances together for good. The evidence of His hand in our lives sometimes seems invisible. Things don’t always make sense from our perspective on the surface.

Like Jesus’ family and friends, things may seem quiet and dark in your life. As far as you can see, there is no reason to hope for a positive outcome. Maybe you are losing hope and waiting for answers to your prayers. Good Friday reminds us that God is always moving behind the scenes and working all things together for good, even if we can’t see it.

3. God has not abandoned you.

You may be familiar with [Joshua 1:9] where God speaks directly to Joshua and commands him not to be afraid. God reminds Joshua that he will be with him wherever he goes. Sometimes, we feel alone because we really are alone. At least physically. Sometimes we feel alone in certain situations or struggles that we face.

I remember how alone Jesus’ followers must have felt when Jesus’ body was buried and the tomb was sealed. They felt that he was truly gone. We see Jesus himself on the cross crying out, “Why have you forsaken me?” We logically know that God is everywhere, but sometimes we feel completely alone. God promises that he will never leave us or forsake us. Even when we are physically alone, Jesus promises that the Holy Spirit will always be with us.

When life seems hopeless, we can choose to anchor ourselves in truth. As we go through difficult situations, God’s faithfulness sees us through. The cross we look at on Good Friday is a symbol of complete victory for those who are in Christ, both now and forever. Jesus conquered death and as His children we can claim that victory on our own terms.
