What does the Bible say about God’s mercy?
The Bible presents mercy as one of the main characteristics of God’s character and an essential element in his relationship with mankind. As man has been affected by sin (the fall), all men have sinned and because of our sin and rebellion, we deserve God’s wrath. Even in Ephesians chapter 2 verse 3 it says that we were “children of wrath”, a poetic phrase that describes our origin and identity with the punishment we deserve for our sin.
Mercy forgives our sins and treats us with compassion, regardless of what we deserve.
In the Old Testament, God’s mercy is often associated with his compassion and steadfast love for his people. The psalms (psalms) in particular are full of expressions of gratitude for God’s mercy and praise for his faithfulness. Psalm 103 verse 8 declares: “God is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and full of steadfast love.” God is patient and compassionate towards His people, even in the face of their shortcomings and disobedience.
The prophets often refer to God’s mercy as a source of hope and salvation for Israel. In the midst of suffering and hardship, Jeremiah reflects on God’s mercy: “God’s mercies never fail, and His kindness has no end. They are renewed every morning, your faithfulness is great” (Morathi 3:22-23). The unceasing nature of God’s mercy is renewed daily, bringing the promise of restoration and renewal.
The Bible introduces mercy as the main characteristic of God’s personality and a fundamental element in his relationship with man. Humans have been affected by the fall (original sin) and we have all sinned. Because of our sin and rebellion, we deserve God’s wrath. Even in Ephesians chapter 2 verse 3 it is said that we were “children of wrath”. This is a literary expression that shows that our origin and identity is tied to the punishment we deserve for our sin.
The celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday among Christians around the world is celebrated in different ways. While the main focus of Divine Mercy Sunday is on the Catholic tradition, Christians of other denominations may also celebrate the day in their own unique ways, keeping in mind the universal message of God’s mercy revealed through Jesus Christ.
Some ways to celebrate Mercy Sunday for Christians today:
Attend a church service: On Mercy Sunday we can attend a church service, where special prayers, hymns and readings related to God’s mercy are held. Priests and archpriests may give sermons on the importance of repentance, forgiveness and trust in God’s mercy, drawing inspiration from the Bible and the teachings of saints such as Saint Faustina Kowalska.
Receiving the Sacraments: In most churches, Holy Communion is held regularly, so we can receive the Sacraments of Confession and Holy Communion on Divine Mercy Sunday by following the instructions of Jesus Christ to Saint Faustina. Confession allows the faithful to repent of their sins and receive God’s forgiveness, while the Lord’s Supper strengthens their union with Christ and His Church. In the tradition of the church where we may not have a formal confession booth, it is scriptural and we can confess in group meetings or with the priest.
Prayer with the Rosary of Divine Mercy: The Rosary of Divine Mercy is a powerful prayer composed by Saint Faustina. This prayer contains a series of prayers and reflections on the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We can print and recite this prayer on Sunday of Divine Mercy individually or in congregation and ask for God’s mercy for ourselves and the whole world.
Veneration of the Image of Divine Mercy: The Image of Divine Mercy, which shows Jesus Christ with red and white rays of light from his heart, has special significance on Divine Mercy Sunday. We may honor this image by prominently displaying it in our homes or churches, and reflecting on the love and mercy of God revealed through Jesus Christ. We can also encourage our church artists to portray this image in different ways.
Performing acts of mercy: In addition to spiritual acts, Divine Mercy Sunday also asks Christians to perform acts of mercy and compassion towards others. This may include helping the poor, visiting the sick and elderly, forgiving those who have wronged us, and helping those in need. By imitating God’s mercy in our lives, we witness the transforming power of God’s love and grace as we help others.
Participating in special services: Some churches and religious communities organize special services or events to celebrate Mercy Sunday. This may include processions or retreats that focus on the theme of God’s mercy and forgiveness. These gatherings provide opportunities for us to deepen our understanding of the Father’s mercy and draw closer to God in prayer and worship.
