Why Does the Bible Say ‘A Soft Answer Turns Away Wrath’?

The phrase “a gentle word turns away wrath” is found in the Bible book of Proverbs, which is part of the Old Testament:

“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” (Proverbs 1:15)

Webster’s dictionary defines a proverb as “a short, colloquial sentence, wise and instructive.” There is another definition for it: “a short sentence that expresses a universal truth for a practical and godly life.” The book of Proverbs is full of profound instructions and words of wisdom. We may have knowledge, but without wisdom, our knowledge is useless.

The book of Proverbs teaches us that how we respond to others affects how they react to our words and actions. In any interaction, we can remain calm or react with anger.

Who said “gentle speech turns away wrath”? (the Bible )

Most of the book of Proverbs was written by Solomon (inspired by the Holy Spirit), although Egur and Lamuel also contributed to the final parts. These words of wisdom were primarily addressed to the people of Israel, but they are full of universal wisdom.

Although Solomon was a rich and successful man, his life was full of chaos. Some of this turmoil began even before he was born. His father, King David, had an affair with a married woman named Bathsheba and then ordered her husband killed to cover up the scandal. Bathsheba’s first child with David died and later Solomon was born.

Shortly after Solomon became king, God appeared to him in a dream and allowed him to ask for anything he wanted. Solomon could have wanted material things—more wealth or other prideful possessions. But he asked for recognition and understanding to lead the people. God was pleased with Solomon and gave him an understanding heart, honor and wealth.

However, Solomon made some poor choices. He had many wives and allowed them to build altars to pagan gods and spread paganism throughout Israel.

Solomon reminds us that God knows all about good and evil. We are never hidden from God. Solomon’s sinful actions were an attempt to fulfill his desires. He was given wisdom, but he didn’t always make the best choices.

Nevertheless, even though Solomon’s life was full of conflict and mistakes, God loved him.

Does “a gentle word turn away wrath” mean that Christians cannot be confrontational?

There will be turbulent periods – past, present and future. Jesus tells us that we will be in trouble, but we can take comfort in knowing that He has overcome the world. His words remind us that this earthly life is not our eternal home. Trials and tribulations come and go. How we deal with those times can lead us and others to a relationship with God or lead us and others astray.

In his second letter to Timothy, the apostle Paul shared with him wisdom about disputes. Paul commanded that the servant of God should not quarrel but should show kindness to everyone. Even the dissidents should be gently taught, in the hope that God will grant them repentance and lead them to know the truth.

Christians are commanded to love one another. So how should we deal with a situation where we are faced with anger? What if someone confronts us with harsh words and threats? Yes, there are times when professional help should be included in the conversation or situation. Should we meet someone else? How do we know when to speak and when to be silent?

The answer is found in prayer. First, pray and ask God to give wisdom for the conversation. There may be times when a person is spoken to privately. Perhaps a misunderstanding can be resolved and the result will be positive.

However, what happens when private chat doesn’t solve the problem? Christians are called to take one or two other believers with them and talk to the person with whom there is a conflict. This method is seen in the Old Testament, requiring more than one person to confirm the accusation (Deuteronomy 17:1).

Paul is talking about a believer who was accused of immoral behavior. Paul advised the Corinthians to remove that person from the church. When the person really changed his behavior, he was readmitted to the church.

“Therefore, I beg you to reaffirm your affection for him.” (2 Corinthians 2:8 Bible)

The Covenant contains numerous examples of encouraging people to make better choices. Examples appear in sections (which you’ve probably seen on note cards, jokes, posters, bumper stickers, and other places).

“Trust in God with all your heart and do not rely on your own understanding; Submit to Him in all your ways, and He will make your paths straight. (Proverbs 3:5-6,)
“Therefore confess your sins to one another and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is strong and effective. (James 5:16 Bible)
“You will keep those whose minds are steadfast in perfect peace, because they trust in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord Himself, is the eternal rock. (Isaiah 26:3-4, Bible translation)
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your needs to God.” (Philippians 4:6 Bible)
“Let us not grow weary in doing good, for in due time we shall reap, if we do not give up.” (Galatians 5:9 Bible)

How did Jesus use “a gentle word to turn away wrath”?

While our first instinct may be to confront, argue, or defend a position, responding to anger with gentleness, gentleness, and kindness can lead to a positive outcome.

The Testaments share how Jesus dealt with conflict.

Jesus often used a soft answer to turn away anger. When Jesus heard that Lazarus was sick, he did not immediately go to Bethany to heal him. A few days later, Jesus arrived in Bethany and met Martha and Mary, who were distraught over the death of their brother. The sisters told Jesus that if he had been there, Lazarus would have lived.

Instead of arguing with the sisters, Jesus asked to see the tomb. Jesus ordered the stone to be rolled away from the tomb, and then prayed.

By raising Lazarus from the dead, God was glorified. Jesus performed a miracle.

Jesus was the subject of discussion among the disciples. They wanted to know which of them would be the greatest. With a soft and peaceful answer, Jesus placed a child next to him. Jesus shared with the group that whoever receives the child has received him and whoever receives Jesus has also received the one who sent him.

Jesus always showed love and compassion. His example is what Christians are called to follow.
