5 names of God that every Christian should know
5 Names of God Every Christian Should Know: The better we can understand who God is, the better we can recognize His voice and follow Him. God’s names are active and show us who He is, how He works, and the different ways we can call upon Him.
There are over a hundred names for God in the Bible and I encourage you to read them to learn more about the God who named you. Here are 10 names of God that I have personally stuck to throughout my life.
1. El Roy: The God who sees me
Hagar was a slave, a woman who became a pawn in the impatience of Sarah and Abraham, waiting for God’s plan to unfold. He knew what it meant to not be seen by those around him.
Hagar, who was impregnated by her master, then abused and left alone, found herself in the desert where an angel appeared and told her that God had heard her cries and for her and the child in the Her womb has plans. He immediately declared, “You are El Roy, the God who sees me.”
Hagar was one of the first female theologians and one of the first people outside the Hebrew family to give God a name.
And like Hagar – in moments of feeling abandoned, isolated and alone – we can call on El Roy, knowing that no matter where we are, our God sees us (Genesis 16:1-16).
2. Jehovah Rui: God is my shepherd
In the ancient world, a shepherd acted as a provider and protector of the flock, one who led the sheep to pasture and water and fought off any attacking wolves.
Our God is a shepherd, but not just any shepherd; God is a royal shepherd, ruling over (our) sheep and ruling over all circumstances. When we need provision, protection, and sovereign guidance in our lives, we can call on Jehovah the Shepherd, the Lord our Shepherd (Psalms 23).
3. Al-Aliyun: The Most High God
When things around us get out of hand, we need to remember that God is in control.
When idolatry threatens our countries, governments, and churches, or when we are focused on our own circumstances and can’t seem to let go, we must cling to the name of El Alion, remembering that God is the Creator of all. The thing is still in control and still on top. (Genesis chapter 14 verses 18 to 20; Deuteronomy chapter 26 verse 19; Psalms chapter 57 verse 2)
4. Yahweh Tsidegnu: Our justice
In a world that equates righteousness with being a “good person,” our daily failures, shortcomings, and sins scream that no amount of willpower can make us good enough.
We need a savior, someone who can do what our weak flesh cannot do. Jesus came so that in moments when our shortcomings threaten to derail us, we can call on Jehovah Tsideknu, the Lord of our righteousness (Jeremiah 23:5-6).
5. El Olam: Eternal God
Often, our limited perspectives become blurred as the moment feels pressing; The trivial, the immediate, can quickly cloud our view of what is truly important.
These are the moments when we need to be reminded of the God who always was and always will be. We need to cry out to El Olam, the eternal God (Psalms 90:1).
