Pope Francis: Do not close the doors to immigrants and foreigners
On the last day of his visit to Hungary, Pope Francis again warned about extreme nationalism in Europe and said: closed doors are painful and contrary to the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Viktor Orbán, a populist who attended mass, sees himself as a defender of Christian values. He has said he will not allow Hungary to become a country of immigrants, just as he claims other countries in Europe are unrecognizable to their native people.
In his homily, 86-year-old Pope Francis said that if Hungarians wanted to follow Jesus, they should avoid the closed doors of our individualism in the midst of an isolating society, the closed doors of our indifference to the disadvantaged and those who suffer. We close the doors to those who are foreign or unlike us, to immigrants or the poor.
Francis believes that migrants fleeing poverty should be welcomed and integrated because they can enrich host countries culturally and bolster Europe’s shrinking population. He believes that while countries have the right to protect their borders, migrants should be distributed throughout the EU.
