Seven Threads of Evidence for God’s Existence

Is there any evidence for the existence of God? believe in God. Sigmund Freud called it a childish fantasy. Bertrand Russell compared it to the belief in the existence of a celestial kettle revolving around the earth. Richard Dawkins likes to say that there are many things he doesn’t believe in: forest elves, fiery dragons, and the flying spaghetti monster. God is just another imaginary being that he adds to his list.

Instead of addressing the theological arguments that have been made throughout history, proponents of atheism simply dismiss God as a being on par with elves, trolls, and the Easter bunny. It’s an evasive maneuver that appeals to those inclined to disbelief.

Russell’s teapot and Santa’s elves are on the long list of things that lack objective evidence but cannot be conclusively rejected (to do so requires an omniscient view that has itself been attacked). However, no sane person would accept them as real beings. So, the argument goes, it must be the same with God: even if his non-existence cannot be proven, the lack of physical data suggests that reasonable people would place him alongside other childish myths and imaginary beings.

This argument is clever but flawed for two reasons.

First, the spinning teapot and the flying spaghetti monster are accepted inventions that are not essential beings like fairies, elves, and Santa Claus. In other words, the world, life and fulfillment of human’s lofty aspirations are not dependent on the existence of such beings. So, while both simple thinkers and great thinkers have been entertained by the adventures of Odysseus and Peter Pan, it is the story of God that has transformed them.

Seven signs of God’s revelation and existence

This is probably why the Bible points to seven aspects of God’s Word that are accessible through the physical, intellectual, social, and spiritual realms of human experience. These aspects are like the threads of a carpet that come together to tell a story that involves the heart, soul, mind and body of our humanity. In the following, we will briefly introduce each of them.

1. created word

“The sky declares the glory of God; The heavens declare the work of his hands. Day by day they make their words flow, and night by night they reveal their knowledge” (Psalms 19:1-2).

The psalmist speaks of the “created word”—the four-dimensional texture of the tangible world brought into being by the word of God. From the tiniest particles to infinity, God’s “voice” reverberates throughout His creation. Its design, with its integrated and irreducible complexity, is a testimony to the existence of the designer. Its greatness and extent is proof of his eternity and absolute power. Its rational order and unique beauty confirm his infinite knowledge and charity. The created word is a solid evidence of the existence of the Creator.

2. closed word

“[He] is the true light, which gives light to every man, came into the world” (John 1:9).

In the Gospel of John we learn that the Creator, Jesus Christ, was not incarnate, and that His work of creation contained the mark of the Creator on human nature. As Solomon wrote a thousand years ago, “He had put eternity in the hearts of men.” C. S. Lewis referred to it as our “godlike void.” The “imprinted word” is the spiritual impulse imprinted on every human being—an irrepressible force to fill a desire that can only be filled with God. It includes the light of reason that enables us to understand the world and our place in it, as well as the light of conscience—our inner sense of right and wrong that alternately defends and accuses us. The ubiquity of the word of the pattern throughout time and culture is proof of its transcendental origin.

3. spoken word

“This is what we speak, not in words taught to us by human wisdom, but in words taught by the Spirit, speaking spiritual truths in spiritual words” (1 Corinthians 2: 13).

Divine thought is also conveyed through the prophetic voice. God speaks through the language of human messengers so that we may “hear and understand.” The prophet receives a word from God and proclaims it to evoke a life-changing response. “Kalaam mashoob” also includes prophecy. Hundreds of prophecies recorded in the Bible reveal divine inspiration centuries before they were fulfilled. The accompanying word reveals God who is by prophesying and “revealing”.

4. written word

“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16).

God’s activity within and outside of time is recorded in the “written word” of the Bible. In 66 books written by 44 authors during 1600 years, the written word is a narrative that is narrated in two parts. The first part deals with a nation and God’s relationship with it. The second part focuses on the person and the church he founded. The written word, in preview and review, speaks of the salvation of the human race by Jesus Christ from God. In doing so, it outlines the only belief system that is logically coherent, corresponds to reality, and has proven capable of filling our “God-like void.”

5. embodied word

“The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. . . No one has ever seen God, but the only God, who is with the Father, has made him known” (John 1:14-18).

Jesus Christ is the most perfect manifestation of God and the best example of holy life. Unlike the distant and indifferent gods of paganism, the “Word Incarnate” is a personal God who is deeply interested in His creation. So much so that He entered the world in human form to walk in our place and experience temptation, hunger and rejection before bearing the punishment for our sin. He is a helper who, because he took a human body, sympathizes with our weaknesses and sufferings. “The Incarnate Word” is the most telling proof of God’s boundless love.

6. Solving word

“But the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have told you” (John 14:26).

Perhaps no Christian doctrine is less understood than that of the Holy Spirit. Nevertheless, as Paul tells us, it is only through him that one comes to the confession that “Jesus is Lord.” At that moment, the Spirit dwells in the heart and mind of the believer. The “resolving word” is the ever-present comforter and counselor that initiates a lifelong process of transformation in the citizens of the kingdom. The supernatural change in the lives of Christians has even caused their critics to wonder, “Look how much they love one another.”

7. Corporate word

“His intention was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God would be known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 3:9-10).

The invisible body of people who believe in Jesus as Lord is the church. As the incarnation of Christ between the Cross and the Second Coming, the “Corporate Word” advances the Kingdom of God by shaping culture and leading people to saving faith and holy living. The transformative effect of Christ’s portrayers on society and their care for the “least” and the “last” is a testimony to God’s world-changing message.
