The first point that Jesus emphasizes about having a log in one’s eye is that we try to remove a speck of straw or even a speck of sawdust from another’s eye, while there is a log in our own eye. It is clear that when the stick is in our own eye, we will not be able to remove the straw from our brother’s eye, because we cannot see well. In addition, if we try to remove the speck from another’s eye while we have a log in our own eye, we will be a hypocrite, that is, we do not follow what we say. Maybe most of us know well what Jesus meant by the existence of pride in the eyes of others. The meaning is the mistake that we think we have found in our brother. This mistake may be something he did to our detriment or his behavior towards us. But what does Jesus mean when he says that we have a log in our own eye? In my opinion, the main meaning is the reaction that we show in front of the straw in another’s eye. Of course, we do not deny that there is a mistake in our brother, but what we want to say is that our reaction and behavior towards this mistake is a mistake itself!
The straw in his eye has created anger, coldness, anger, criticism, bitterness, ugly words and malice in us. All these flow from the same source, which is called lack of love. Jesus Christ considers this lack of love to be much worse than the straw that is in our brother’s eye. (This straw feather is sometimes so small that our brother does not notice its existence and it is often unintentional). Jesus Christ wants to make us understand how much worse our reaction to the minor mistakes of others is than their mistakes by using the example of a straw and a stick, one of which is very small and the other is very big!
Every time we point the finger at someone’s mistakes and say “it’s your fault”. Our three fingers point to ourselves. God must have mercy on us. Because we have often hypocritically tried to correct others. While God knows that there are things in our hearts that are thousands of times worse than their mistakes. In addition, one should not think that the talk is only about our violent reactions.
At the very first time when anger starts in us and it appears with the first signs of unkindness and critical thoughts, the stick in our eye appears. If our situation is like this, our vision will decrease and we will not be able to see our brother as he is and we will forget that God loves him. If our heart is full of such thoughts when we talk to our brother, naturally he will treat us like ourselves. Because this rule rules in relationships between people: “With the same measure you weigh, it will be weighed to you” (Matthew 2:7).
