Who Asked Jesus, ‘I Believe Help My Unbelief’?
In the Bible, many characters have asked Jesus to help them or expressed their requests to him at different times. But one of the requests that clearly shows the great influence of Jesus on people is the request of faith. In this article, we examine the man who asked Jesus to remove his unbelief and examine the significance of this request.
Many of us have struggled with doubt, doubt about God’s inerrant Word, doubt about the saving power of our faith, doubt about God caring about us personally. Doubts can prevent us from reaching God. But there is a father in the Bible who shows us that doubts are a reason to draw closer to God, not away. Our Father utters the famous prayer “I believe, remove my unbelief” in the Bible. These words are dear to many because they reflect the state of our hearts. We need God’s help, but our faith in Him weakens. We must remember: God can work with little faith.

What happened before a man asked Jesus, “I believe, remove my unbelief”?
Jesus performed many miracles during his time on earth, including healing miracles. One of these miracles was the healing of a boy possessed by the devil in the Gospel of Mark, chapter 9, verses 14-29. The evil spirit in this boy could only be expelled through prayer. Therefore, although the disciples had tried to cast out the evil spirit, they were unsuccessful. But the boy’s father did not completely lose hope. He was part of the crowd that was amazed to see Jesus. The crowd turned to Jesus, Jesus approached and assessed the situation.
In the introduction to this story in the Gospel of Mark, Jesus laments being in an unbelieving generation: “O unbelieving generation, how long shall I be with you? How long should I put up with you?” (Mark 9:19).
Jesus expressed his displeasure and displeasure that the disciples could not cast out this demon. They did not think to go to God and ask for His power. They tried to exorcise the spirit with their usual methods and it seems they gave up.
Why did the man say: “I believe, remove my disbelief”?
In this section, the issue of weak faith is prominent. After the disciples failed to cast out the demon, the boy’s father asked Jesus for help by saying, “If you can.” Jesus graciously and encouragingly answered that “all things are possible to him that believeth” (Mark 9:23).
Realizing his unbelief, the father declared his need and asked Jesus for help: “I believe, remove my unbelief.”
Father’s cry showed his humility and honesty. Given the difficulty of the situation (the disciples’ inability to cast out the devil and his son’s dire need), it was not surprising that he hesitated to do anything. His humble prayer was to receive help from Jesus to strengthen his faith and believe in something that seemed impossible. No one else could help him, but Jesus was no ordinary person.
The father looked to Jesus and believed that Jesus could do anything. He had faith while doubting. Jesus accepted the honesty and humility of the father, who cared so much for his son that he did not want to lose this opportunity with Jesus because of his unbelief.
Jesus once again showed his grace. Although the father’s faith was not as strong as it could have been, Jesus was strong enough to heal this father’s son. Jesus took the father’s weak faith and responded with powerful healing.
What happened after the man said, “I believe, remove my unbelief”?
After the man’s speech, Jesus cast out the spirit with the command to leave. By doing this, Jesus demonstrated his authority. This event showed that the father could have faith in Jesus, the God-man (both fully God and fully man). Jesus cast out that devil with power. This incident showed us that with God, everything is possible. That soul would never enter that boy’s body again.
The evil spirit came out screaming and convulsing. The possession was so intense that after the evil spirit left, the boy appeared to be dead. But Jesus took the boy by the hand, lifted him up, and showed him to his father and the crowd around them. The power and authority of Jesus was clearly displayed.
After this, the disciples went to Jesus and asked him why they could not cast out the devil. Jesus revealed that it was a demon that only comes out through prayer. The disciples realized what their mistake was. In their weakness, they did not turn to God through prayer.
Asking Jesus for faith shows his great influence on people and shows that even in the face of unbelief and doubt, faith in Jesus can help people. This request is an example of the human need for deliverance and hope in God, and it shows that faith in Jesus can bring a profound change in people’s lives.
