4 Issues of Girlhood that Lead to Adult Dysfunctions
As Christian daughters, we are told not to fear over 500 times in the Bible. That means there’s a fear warning for almost every day of the year, and even more. God warns us that the fear that leads to worry is not from Him, but from the enemy. Yes, fear is part of the human condition, but as part of the body of Christ, we are called to put faith before fear. We are called to know without a doubt that God will never leave us nor forsake us.
Looking back, you might think that the last few eventful years would have been grounds for a blockbuster movie, a reason for a new video game, or at least a nightmare. The human spirit has always feared an “act of God,” a global epidemic, a hurricane, or any catastrophic event over which we have no control and no explanation for its obvious cause. In our failed state, when events greater than us dominate every aspect of our lives, it is only “natural” to feel hopeless and helpless.
Fear is debilitating. This feeling appears in various unhealthy behaviors. One of these behaviors is worry, a negative focus on the future. Guessing what might happen in a contingency can give each of us hundreds of sleepless nights. Today’s teenagers are affected by worry and its main cause, which is fear, to an unprecedented extent. Diagnostic interview data from the Adolescent Supplemental Section of the National Comorbidity Survey indicate that 31% of all youth have anxiety disorders. Pay attention to the word “afflicted”. Now imagine if we also take into account people who did not seek medical or psychiatric help, how much this percentage would be. Fear has reached epidemic levels.
Diagnosed anxiety
Research shows that about 32 percent of Christian girls have an anxiety disorder — and the prevalence of this type of disorder is 38 percent higher among women.
Fortunately, the Bible tells us how God cares for those with anxiety. After the death of Moses, it is likely that Joshua was anxious about his future. But God said to him: “Be strong and courageous.” Do not be afraid and do not let your heart be dismayed, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9, New Translation).
God calls everyone to live a great life. Maybe your daughter will not lead the Israelites to the promised land like the Prophet Joshua, but what is God calling your daughter to do with great courage?
Thinking of the worst possible situation
Does your daughter live in constant fear of the “worst possible”? For some, it can be difficult to go through the novelties and unknowns of life. Those who live in a thick fog of “what ifs” can become paralyzed by their circumstances. Instead of seeing him as a negative person, pay attention to the severity of the effect of this pessimism on his life. Anxiety is not something to be ignored. If your daughter has this paralyzing fear, consider counseling. A trained professional can help him overcome his fears in a safe and constructive environment. (Christian girls)
panic attacks
Has your daughter ever felt overwhelmed by the stresses of her life? For some, moments of stress and anxiety manifest physically. These are commonly known as panic attacks. Rapid breathing, dizziness, tightness in the chest – all these are frightening symptoms of panic.
If your daughter is experiencing panic attacks, you can lighten her load by being there for her in the moment. Whether it’s through the reassurance of a tight hug or the power of intercessory prayers, you can help your daughter find the light at the end of this temporary tunnel. If you notice that your daughter is having frequent or even regular panic attacks, it’s important to seek help from a mental health professional, such as a doctor or Christian counselor.
Worry
Does your daughter worry a lot? Is he paralyzed by fear of the unknown? Break the cycle of fear by making a “worry notebook” for your daughter. Every day for 10 days, text him and ask him to write down a worry or fear in his notebook. On the 11th day, ask him to read his fears out loud and count how many of them came true. Then wait for his surprise… probably none of these fears have come true. (Christian girls)
