A Christian view of the “traditional wife” trend in the Bible

The term “traditional wife” in the Bible, which represents the view of a wife with traditional values, was introduced about six years ago when several Millennial and Zoom housewives started displaying their ideal home lifestyle on social media. came into being

These young ladies began to celebrate the iconic image of American women in the 1950s by wearing classic dresses and cloches with aprons and high heels. With a beaming smile, they put food on the table for their family, sweep their immaculate homes, or greet their spouses with a loving kiss at the end of the day. Their message is to showcase the traditional gender roles and culture of that nostalgic period. When men were the sole breadwinners and financial providers and women stayed at home and took care of the family.

According to Estee Williams, a 25-year-old “traditional wife” and TikTok influencer who inspires women to cook for their husbands, clean the house and beautify themselves, “a traditional wife submits to her husband and serves her family. This concept is not derogatory and does not value her less than her husband. This is more common among traditional Christians.” Many of his recent videos share how to find a manly man and offer advice to high school girls who are curious about his “old” lifestyle and eager to know more.

Looking at the Bible, how should we respond to the “traditional wife” movement?

This phenomenon of wanting to have a traditional, simpler and older way of life is not a new thing. After all, this is the cycle of life, as families pass on their traditions to their children. It is natural for children to accept some of those customs and discard others, maybe even start something new. This is where old ethics and new terms like “traditional wife” come into play.

However, these domestic definitions are not synonymous with the ideal biblical housewife in Proverbs 31 or Titus 2. While the “traditional wife” emphasizes some biblical views, it completely misses others. While there are distinct gender roles in God’s Word, we are all called to submit to Christ first and foremost (James 4:7) and then to each other in marriage (Ephesians 5:21).

While the “traditional wife” focuses on the outward appearance and authority of the husband, the biblical wife of virtue encourages marriage to be based on faith and glorify God together. Marriage is a ministry in which the husband is called to love his wife as Christ loved the church and the wife is called to submit to her husband so that he can confidently lead. In this relationship, there is love, respect and mutual respect (Ephesians 5:21-33).

The woman in Proverbs 31 seeks God’s heart (Mark 12:30), accepts her role as a mother and wife, cares about her feminine beauty (1 Peter 3:3-4), is a joyful giver (2 Corinthians 9:6- 8), he serves with a giving heart and walks purposefully and seeks the providence and will of God for his life. This could mean working at home or outside the home.

Titus 2 is generally an older (wiser) woman who is portrayed as a role model and mentor to the young women, teaching them to trust God and walk in obedience. They share the true meaning of submission, which is walking with dignity and grace, honoring God’s plan for marriage, and encouraging young wives to serve and love their husbands and families with compassion. (Holy book)

With any cultural movement, we must be careful not to be swayed by its seductive charms and instead find God’s providence and direction for our lives by digging into God’s Word and seeking the truth. The beauty of God’s word is that it never changes (Psalms 118:89, Isaiah 40:8, Malachi 6:3). In a world that is constantly changing, his words remain constant. We can count on it, it’s a promise!
