How Can I Find Comfort from God after Losing My Job?

Losing my job alone, along with the damage to my pride, the disruption of relationships with colleagues and the shocking disruption of balance – well, it all hurts the soul a bit. You may go from feeling sad and scared to the point where you want to smash the plates and then go back to the first feeling. But in the midst of this or any other unexpected change, there are unexpected gifts and promises you can grab:

God protects you and invites you to form a new personality. As stated in James 1:2&12, “My brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of various kinds, count it pure joy, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance… Blessed is he who in Persevere under the test, for when he has endured the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.”

God has prepared you for a brighter future. This will set you on a much brighter path in your calling. As Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for your harm, plans to give you hope and a future.”

You have room to dream again – God can do much more than you can imagine in this trial. Ephesians 3:20 declares, “Now to him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we can ask or imagine, according to the power that works in us, glory be in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations forever and ever! Amen !”

You may lie awake at night worrying about the future. But you can know that God is in it. You can trust God completely. You are invited to bring every troubling thought to Jesus, trust Him wholeheartedly, and lean on the Spirit daily. Philippians 4:6 instructs us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

It can bring you closer to the presence of God. God can use this unemployment for your spiritual growth and formation. Romans 8:28 reminds us that “in all things God works for the good of those who love Him.”

If you’re going through an unexpected and frustrating transition of any kind, here are some things you can do.

Accept your feelings.

Express your anger, sadness, grief (yes, it’s a form of mourning) and frustration to God and trusted people. Don’t rush to fix it. Sit in this mess for a while. If you spend some time alone with your grief, you will move forward with more resilience. (I know you can’t spend a lot of time when you need to look for a job. But give yourself some sacred space and care.)

Retrain your mind.

You are valuable, worthy and capable. When any lies about shame, inadequacy, or failure come to mind, stop them and replace them with more truthful thoughts like, “I’m learning. I will not let this defeat me. I deserve the best.”

Dream about your future.

Now that you have to forge a new path for yourself, what can you do? What might God be calling you to do?

Trust God.

Consider Psalm 30, the Message translation, where David says, “I give you the credit. You pulled me out of that mess, God.” Have faith that God will manage these conditions; God takes care of you. You can trust Him to provide and guide you.

I always say this, and I mean it: every hint of goodness is a divine guidance.
