What does the Bible say about guardian angels?
For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.” – Psalm 91:11 NIV
What does the Bible say about guardian angels? Is there an angel responsible for that sudden brake that prevents a car accident, or for making us late in the morning, thus avoiding a potential incident? Is there an angel that pulls us out of confusion to prevent us from tripping and breaking a leg? What if that extra encouragement we feel at the start of a race, or the sense of hope when we look up and see a rainbow emerging from the clouds, is their doing?
God encourages us and reaches out to help us in various ways. Angels are one of these ways. Every day, we can feel the pressure of sin and the snares of the devil in our daily lives. It’s a heavy burden. We are often under attack. Our enemy is not creative, but he is ruthless in his tactical lies and in targeting isolation.
But we must not lose hope, for Psalm 91 assures us that God commands an army of angels for us. Dan Wilson writes, “They were created just before the foundation of the earth… created to do the will of God… spiritual beings, not bound by gravity or other natural forces… invisible unless God chooses to make them visible.”

Why did God create angels? (What the Bible says about angels)
When the pressure of evil gets to a point where it seems unbearable or impossible to fight, we can know that God sees us, hears us, and provides a way of relief and comfort that is found in the person of Christ. Angels are the marvelous representatives of our great God, and we can put on the full armor of God through Christ every day, knowing that a real army stands ready to protect us from what we may not see.
They move ahead of us to protect us because God is ahead of us, and they are under His command. Our God is a personal God. He surely comes down to touch our lives in a personal and intimate way. He sees us, hears us, and knows our hearts completely. He formed us and gave us a specific purpose. When we cry out for help, He hears us. He protects us from many elements in the spiritual realm that we cannot see. (What the Bible says about angels)
Are Christians protected by angels?
For believers in Christ, guardian angels are a reality. While we are under specific evil attacks aimed at destroying individuals and masses, the army of God’s angels is actively involved in protecting His children. In Matthew 18:10, it says, “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.” The “little ones” refer to believers.
Angels are representatives and messengers under the will and authority of God. In a world cursed by evil and sin, it is comforting to know that God’s forces are fighting for us. Bible study tools explain, “Guardian angels are divine agents of God appointed to protect and assist people here on earth in times of need.”
Guardian angels are servants of the Almighty God and therefore should not be prayed to or placed above God, who has ultimate authority over them, nor above Jesus, who reigns. Billy Graham once responded to a question about guardian angels: “If we know Christ, His angels are continually watching over us… God surrounds us with a host of angels to protect us and go before us.” God is sovereign over all creation, nature, and humanity. Just as the elements of nature are subject to Him, so are the angels serving for God’s glory. “In speaking of the angels, he says, ‘He makes his angels spirits, and his servants flames of fire.’” (Hebrews 1:7 NIV)

According to the Bible, does every Christian have a guardian angel?
Angels are subject to the will of the Father. As John Gilhooly writes for The Gospel Coalition, “God’s care for His children is evident in that angels rejoice over salvation (Luke 15:10), carry the departed believer to heaven (Luke 16:22), and are eager to witness the spread of the gospel (1 Peter 1:12).”
However, we cannot conclude from these events that all believers have an angel nearby to protect them, or that each has their own personal angel. Angels can have a profound presence in our daily lives by encouraging us. Psalm 104:4 says, “He makes winds his messengers, flames of fire his servants.” And Hebrews 1:14 reads, “Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?”
Angels are messengers or representatives of God’s purposes (NIV Study Bible). They should never be considered more powerful or capable than the one who sits with sovereignty over them. Jesus reigns and intercedes for us through prayer. Yes, Jesus our Savior prays for us! Dan Wilson explains, “Although angels can be present with us and hear us, they are not God. They should never be worshipped or prayed to because they are subject to Christ.”
Daniel 10:12-13 reads, “Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them. But the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me because I was detained there with the king of Persia.” Daniel was no stranger to encounters with angels. He trusted God’s guidance in his steps, regardless of where they led. Daniel was protected by angels in the lion’s den (Daniel 6:22) and his friends in the fiery furnace (Daniel 3:28).
God’s mercy and love in protecting us
The idea of having guardian angels active in our lives is comforting and leads us to praise God for His sovereignty and supreme power. Dr. Roger Barrier explains, “I assume our guardian angels are always on duty and ready to help. I imagine their help comes in various forms.” We may never know in what ways we’ve been protected by God’s army of angels throughout our lives.
The serious threat of evil in our lives is far greater than cartoonish images. In our sin-stained world, where evil roams ruthlessly, it is impossible to avoid pain. That is why bad things happen to all kinds of people, everywhere in life. Our hope lies in Christ’s victory over death and in knowing that we are cared for by our great and compassionate God.
The God who sent His only Son to die for us out of love, knowing our inability to escape the consequences of sin, is the same God who extends His arm of support to His chosen ones. The Bible says Jesus leaves the ninety-nine to find the one. He is actively pursuing us.
Everything God does and allows is to draw us closer to Him, to bring us back to Him, to remind us who He is and to whom we belong. John Gilhooly explains, “Christ is the full armor of God against ‘the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms’ (Ephesians 6:12).” In Him, we are safe from powers, angels, and rulers (Romans 8:38-39).
Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. Through Him and only Him do we reach the Father. Jesus said that when we remain in Him, we can ask for anything. He repeatedly commands us to remain in Him, seek Him, and follow Him. Angels exist under the authority of Christ. When we seek Jesus in our daily lives, we are promised to find Him. The one true God lives in every believer in Christ through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
