At sunset, Jacob stops at a place and picks up a stone for his pillow. In his sleep, he sees a strange dream.

In this dream, he sees a ladder that extends from the earth to the sky and the angels of God go up and down on it. At the top of the ladder, God is standing. God repeats to him the promise he made to Jacob’s grandfather, Abraham, and his father, Isaac. God promises to bless Jacob, give him many children, and give him the land on which he rested. God assures Jacob that he will be with him on his journey and will protect him.

When Jacob wakes up, he is filled with fear and reverence from this divine meeting. He takes the stone he used as a pillow and builds it as a pillar, anoints it with oil and names the place “Bethel” which means “house of God”. Jacob also vows to serve God and tithe everything he receives.

The dream of Jacob’s divine ladder

Yaqub moved from Beersheba to Haran. He reached a place at sunset and stayed there for the night. He took one of the stones from that place, placed it under his head and slept there. He dreamed that a ladder was erected on the ground and its top reached to the sky. God’s angels were going up and down on it! And behold, God was standing at the top of the ladder and said: “I am God, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac.” I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are sleeping. Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth and you will spread to the west and east and north and south and in you and your descendants all the families of the earth will be blessed. Indeed, I am with you and I will keep you wherever you go and bring you back to this land. Because I will not leave you until I do what I promised you.”

Then Jacob woke up and said: “Surely God is in this place and I did not know it.” And he was afraid and said: “How great is this place!” “Here is nothing but the house of God and the gate of heaven.”

So, early in the morning, Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on it. He named the place Bethel, but the name of the city was originally Luz. Then Jacob made a vow and said: “If God is with me and keeps me on the way I am going and gives me bread to eat and clothes to wear, so that I can return to my father’s house in safety and peace, then God will be my God and this stone that I have placed for the pillar will be God’s house. And of all that you give me, I will give you a full tenth.” (Genesis 28:10-22)
