The Bible does not definitively say where Joseph, Jesus’ godfather, was at the time of Jesus’ death.
The last time Joseph’s name is mentioned in the Bible is when Jesus was 12 years old. At that time, Jesus was separated from his parents and found in the temple arguing with the religious teachers. This was the first time that Jesus spoke of the need to be in his heavenly Father’s house (Luke 2:41-50).
From that event onwards, Joseph’s name is no longer mentioned in the Bible. Since Joseph is not mentioned again, most scholars believe that he died before the beginning of the mission of Jesus Christ.Joseph’s life
That being said, not much is known about Joseph in the Bible. We are told that Joseph was a carpenter and most likely raised Jesus in this trade. Also, through Joseph’s actions, we are told a lot about his character.
Going back to the time Maryam was pregnant, many men would not stay engaged to Maryam. Mary was a virgin, but she was pregnant. She was conceived by divine intervention because she was to be the mother of Christ. This is known in Christianity as the miraculous conception.
Many men at that time shamed Mary and made the whole city aware of her “betrayal”, even though Mary had done nothing wrong. Although premarital pregnancy has become commonplace today, at the time, it seemed terrifying and terrifying.
There was not much grace at that time. Other than that, Maryam was a teenager, some scholars estimate her age to be around 13 years old.
Instead of subjecting Mary to a lifetime of embarrassment and shame, Joseph planned to subtly separate from her and cancel the wedding to protect Mary’s reputation.
This alone shows the kind and gentle nature of Yusuf. Joseph’s nature is also seen in the fact that when Mary tells him that she is divinely pregnant, he does not leave her. She decides to stay with him.
How many people today, let alone the New Testament era, were willing to stay with Mary? Few stayed like Joseph. This shows us once again how kind Joseph is and how much he loves Mary.
While Maryam was in the final stages of her pregnancy, she and Yusuf were forced to travel due to the census. Shortly after their arrival in Bethlehem, Mary gave birth to Jesus.
Joseph was present the whole time and most likely helped Mary deliver the baby. Yusuf helped in everything he could and was happy when the baby was born into the world.
It is easy for us to know where Joseph was when Jesus died. As we have already learned, Joseph had died before Jesus began his ministry on earth. This means that Joseph was dead when Jesus died.
As kind and supportive as Joseph was to Jesus, if he had been alive he would have been present at his crucifixion, as was Mary. However, Joseph was not present at Jesus’ crucifixion because he had already passed away.
What can we learn from Joseph’s life?
Yusuf’s life has many lessons for us. Even when it means nothing to him personally, he shows tremendous trust in God and trusts in God’s way.
Most of the time, everyone likes to comment on Mary’s great faith and she had great faith, but Joseph is often overlooked.
He also showed great faith and trust because, like Mary, his entire reputation could be destroyed. Despite the bad things that could happen, Joseph decided to trust God regardless of the outcome.
Also, from Joseph’s life, we are taught what it means to be truly caring, compassionate and kind to others. In none of Joseph’s interactions with Mary, was he ever rude or ill-treated. He is always gentle and kind. Likewise, we are never told that he mistreated Jesus. He properly fulfills the role of an earthly father to God. While Jesus knew his real father, he also respected his earthly father.
