Who is Jesus Christ? (Part II)

bread of life

In John 6:35, Jesus Christ says: “I am the bread of life.” Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

To understand what Jesus Christ meant by this verse, perhaps it is better to pay attention to the previous verses where Jesus says that Moses did not give the bread from heaven, but it was God the Father who gave the true bread, and the true bread is the one that comes down from heaven. Give life to the world.

In fact, Jesus introduces himself as the heavenly Manna, which had a special meaning for the Jews, but he is the bread that whoever eats it will not be thirsty or hungry. That is, knowing God is actually the true bread to receive eternal life.

light of the world

In John 8:12 and 9:5, Jesus Christ spoke to the people again and said: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. And “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

In John chapter 1, verse 4, the word of God says, “In him was life, and the life was the light of man”, God is light and Jesus Christ is the same light and illuminates the way of life, he is like a pillar of fire in the desert in Exodus 13: 21 who used to light the way for the Israelites, today is the light for the whole world and whoever walks with him will not be in the darkness of the world.

Before there is Abraham, I am!

In John 8:58, Jesus says: “Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am!” In this verse, Jesus Christ does not say that “he was”, but he says “I am” and in this way he declares his eternal existence and unity with God the Father.

For the Jews, Abraham was a character with whom God made a covenant, and God’s prophecy to Abraham was seen in the multiplication of his descendants in the nation of Israel, and now Jesus Christ claimed that he was before Abraham.

good shepherd

In John 10:11 he says: “I am the good shepherd.” The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. Shepherd was a word that had a special meaning for the people of Israel, where it is used to describe Jacob, the father of Israel in Genesis 31:39, and also for David in 1 Samuel 17:34-37, Jesus himself as a shepherd. Nico introduces that he is willing to lay down his life for the sheep, which is the same as giving life to believers at the cost of his life.

It is also possible to refer here to Isaiah’s prophecy in chapter 53 verses 6 and 7 about the suffering servant and to the Gospel of John chapter 15 verse 13 that there is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
